Here's a fabulous twist on the Poet-Tree idea from Sarah at Ashburton College.

Through the week their students had lots of fun creating 'spine poetry'. The resulting 'poems' were photocopied and used to ‘foliate’ the tree.

Here is our 'poetree', blooming with poems selected or written by our staff and students.

It has been enormous fun discussing and choosing our poems! The students also had a go at some 'blackout poetry' with some very creative and interesting results!

National Poetry Day (New Zealand)

To celebrate National Poetry Day on Friday 28th August we have arranged several activities in the library. This display is to link in with the activities.

English classes have been invited to the library to spend a period looking at poems and either selecting a poem for our Poetree or doing some 'blackout poetry' (more on that later).

Words into Poems

This term's major display from Barbara is "Words into Poems".

She says: "I have provided the words and all the students need to do is access their creativity and rearrange the words into poems. I'm hoping this will be as popular as our past interactive displays".

Poetry Month

Thanks to Michelle, Library Assistant at Tahoma Junior High School for sharing this great idea and display encouraging student participation. Here are her comments:

'This April we did a month-long promotion for National Poetry Month at our junior high library. I took my inspiration from this year’s national poster (featuring an excerpt from Leaves of Grass) and from poetry.org’s Poem in Your Pocket Day. We decided to give out “poems for your pocket” every school day in April. Teachers, staff, and students were asked to contribute favorite or original poems; then encouraged to stop by the library to pick up a new poem to read & share each day. We featured a different poem each day, and noted who had submitted it. Size-wise, I tried to fit 3 copies per page, so I could cut the poems into narrow strips. The most popular by far were the original poems written by students. We printed those on colored paper so they were easily spotted. A copy of each day’s poem was also posted in our window gallery – by the end of the month, we had a great collection that ranged from silly to serious, short to long, penned by well-known to obscure poets. It was fun to see and share what others considered their favorite poems, and to share original student works. This promotion was very successful, and we’ve even had some students say they miss the daily poems now that it’s ended.

Poet-Tree

I love the whole concept of Bree Forsyth's Poet-Tree (see Blog Post June 30th 2011). Here is my rendition! I thought all those bright green leaves were just right for the onset of spring.
Putting this display together was amazingly easy. I pulled one of the Wheelers book packages out of the recycle bin to make the trunk. The leaves have the names of poets on them and were gently folded in half at the trunk end to give some dimension.

A suprising number of our students enjoy reading poetry, this is our most recent aquisition:
'Does your face fit: Poems about fitting in and standing out'

Poet-Tree

Another wonderful display from Bree. I love the play on words.
Bree says:
'I am constantly re-filling the “Poet-Tree”. Before putting this up some of our poetry books were only getting borrowed a couple of times a year, now they are constantly on loan. For this display I cut a tree trunk out of brown paper & did some bark lines with crayon. The leaves were made on Microsoft Publisher- clipart again with word art poet names over the top'.
