Back to the Books

By Stephanie Trzeciakiewicz

Welcome to a new school year all those in the Northern Hemisphere - hope it's a good one!

Thanks to Stephanie for sharing her 'Back to School' display. It's great that she was able to recycle book covers used in previous displays. Here are her comments:

'Here is my Back to School display. I cut out giant letters that read Back to the Books and centered them on our HUGE bulletin board outside the library. I then surrounded the letters with different sized book covers. It has gotten a lot of attention when people stop to see which books they have read and which books they would like to read. Believe it or not, about 80 percent of the book covers were ones I had saved from past displays, and only had to print out some of our newer titles. Took a lot of staples, though!'

Meet the library staff

By Mary Leyva

Thanks to Mary from Colorado Academy for sharing this great way to introduce library staff to new students. Here are her comments:
'We created a 'Meet The Library Staff' display for the beginning of school. We have a new librarian and incoming 6th graders at our middle and upper school library. It is a fun way for students and faculty to meet us. We included basic information like our names and work hours, but also fun stuff like our favorite books, interests, areas of expertise and what we would be doing if we weren't working in a library. Essential to this display are our pictures, so folks can but a name to a face. It's a little busy with the 'vintage glasses' wallpaper (from Papersource) in the background, but kids have enjoyed it!'

Library Staff

By Josephine Crimp

This display is one that Josephine does each year to introduce library staff to new students. The display includes the library monitors which makes them feel special - which of course they are!!

Welcome to School!

By Sue Kay
A big welcome back to Sue who has generously shared many of her creative displays in the past.
Sue works at Tincurrin Primary School.
Here are her comments:
'This is a very quick display I did for the start of the year. I used a piece of black card and wrote on it with chalk to resemble the old blackboard. I added an old chair, an apple and a globe then added some new stationery I found in the cupboards'.

iRead - Connect at the Marriott Library

By Bess Gonglewski
Here's a clever display by Bess that is sure to catch the attention of our techno-savvy students.
Its message is that through the library, like an iPod, students can 'connect' with books, ebooks, the on-line bibliography tools as well as all the databases. Each square is a different e-tool or type of book.
This could be a great way to visually back up the introduction of your library resources to new students as part of library orientation.

Oh the places we have been...AND...the places we will go

By Mary Beth Spivey
This is a great display by Mary Beth Spivey, Library Media Specialist at Riverside Middle School, Evans, Georgia. She used it to start the new term off with a very positive message, celebrating the activities of summer and encouraging the students to try new activities in school. I love the way Mary Beth has used the wordle idea.
This is what she says:
"To start the new school year off, I wanted the students to be aware of fun school events/clubs they could expect throughout the year by comparing it to typical activities they may done over the summer. Using wordle.org, I created a display of activities “words” with the saying…”Oh the places we have been AND….. the places we will go”. I used real flip flops to emphasize the summer activities, and tennis shoes, cleats, etc. for the school activities. It’s been a great visual for students (especially 6th gr.) to learn of various team sports and clubs offered at the middle school level".
