Never judge a book by its movie

Prompted by the number of books being made into movies at the moment, I decided it was time to do another movie/book display.

I found images of DVDs which I printed onto card and stuck onto a film strip. To give a bit more dimension to the display I used a glue gun and stuck each DVD on with some packing chips so that they stood out from the board.

Read the Book - See the Movie

As students wait expectantly for the release of 'Divergent' this display is very pertinent. 

Thanks for sending us your fabulous display Michelle, it is beautifully done and very effective!

Here are Michelle's comments:

'I’m submitting my display that features YA books made into movies. The Divergent series is extremely popular at our junior high, and the movie will be released this month. To tie in to the students’ excitement, this display features YA books recently adapted to the big screen. The movies on the film strips are 2013 and 2014 releases - with future release dates highlighted in large yellow dots. (The one exception is To Kill a Mockingbird, which is required reading for our 9th graders.) Everything in the case is made from paper except the Oscar statuette and popcorn containers (the “popcorn” itself is crumpled yellow & white paper). The film strips were created in MS Publisher using clip art for the border and movie poster images found online. I printed one 6”x8” frame per page, trimmed, and taped together to make each strip. The movie marquee is a PowerPoint template. I love to give displays a layered look. In this display I used push pins behind the spotlights to pop them from the background, and also tape and rubber bands to curve the film strips. I framed the interior of the case with a red paper “curtain” similar to a movie theater. It makes the case very visible in the hallway, and gives it a dimensional look that draws the students in. The books at the bottom of the case have also been adapted to the big screen. I enjoy talking with students about which was better, the book or the movie – of course most of the time we agree the book was the most satisfying!'

Lights..Camera..Read!

Stephanie is a librarian at McGrath Library at Hilbert College, a small liberal arts college located outside of Buffalo, NY, USA.
She has shared this "Lights..Camera...Read!" display focusing on books turned movies and movies from books.
To get students interested in the display they gave away free bags of popcorn to the first 20 students who borrowed a movie.
Stephanie included some classics, such as 'To Kill a Mockingbird' along with some new favourites such as 'Twilight'.

I like the clever "lights..camera..read!" wording. It's lovely to see yet another successful interpretaion of the popular movies/books theme. Thanks Stephanie.

Books as Movies

Thanks for sharing these great displays with us Lisa. 'Books as Movies' is a popular theme and it's lovely to see some more creativity associated with it. I love the details in your displays. The red cardboard curtains are stunning and the border made with admission tickets looks great. The voting system, described below, is also wonderfully inventive!
Here are some details from Lisa:
"We have 2 library entrances, each with a large bulletin board and display shelves. We decorated the bulletin boards to set our theme and then had different books/movies displayed around the library. The students were asked to vote (if they had read the book and seen the movie) on which they liked better. The ballots looked like pieces of popcorn and the students placed them in popcorn boxes. Voting was open for a week. We announced the results during morning announcements and sent an to the classroom teachers e-mail as well. In most cases the books got more votes than the movies!"

Which came first - the movie or the book?

Sandra Keane, Library Assistant from St Brendan's School, Upper Hutt has sent this photo of a recent display she has made for her library. I really like the 'interactive' dimension of this display - considering the inquisitive nature of our students I'm sure it attracted more attention than a regular display!

Here are Sandra's comments:
I had the idea after reading about a librarian that had been able to hand a student a copy of "The Bridge to Terabithia" after they had complained "If only someone could write a book as good as the movie Bridge to Terabithia it would be great".
It got me thinking and the photo shows what I came up with.

Unfortunately the very bright green paper that I printed the heading onto had faded to pastel by the time I took the photo!
Underneath the pages shown in the photograph were sheets showing the movie release year vs book publication year beneath the appropriate icon at the bottom of the page.

It was interesting to see which students & teachers were stumped, I also learnt a few things while I was researching the release year vs publication year dates!

Books and Movies

This is a well worn theme - but it never fails to get books moving off the shelves. Our students are getting really excited about some of their favourite books being made into films - Twilight (December 08); The Lovely Bones (late 2009); Cirque Du Freak (soon)

Hollywood poster was from Google images and adapted, film pictures courtesy of clip art. The poster has been glued into an old magazine so it looks like a book.
