I was looking for an opportunity to promote our E-book collection again and managed to find time to throw this display together ready for 'Read an E-Book Week' next week. We have eBook copies of all the print books on display. The poster was downloaded from the link above. 

Zero Discrimination Day: 1 March 2016

Zero Discrimination Day is a UNAIDS campaign of solidarity that stands up to racism, discrimination at work, discrimination at school, and other activities that reduce people's ability to participate fully and meaningfully in society. Around the world, this movement has garnered the support of many celebrities and prominent figures who want a world free of stigma and discrimination.

For this display I printed off a copy of this year's poster with a short description about the campaign. The butterflies were copied from the shape used on the official logo and include words encouraging tolerance and respect.

'Your Zero Discrimination display was inspiration for me as I'd never heard of this particular day, and with our racial issues at the forefront of the news, it is particularly apt.
So I quickly downloaded their posters etc and created this noticeboard and a display of relevant books in the library'.

Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.

Spring into a Good Book

Spring is sprung, the grass is ris ..... this suspended host of golden daffodils gently wave in the breeze as the students wander by .....

                                    ...... hopefully they will stop and take out a book!

St Patrick's Day

'This is the St Patrick's Day display we created at the Tamarack District Library in Lakeview, Michigan. What started as a green topped table with Irish books on it took a whole new look with a paper streamer rainbow, posterboard cloud and a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow'.

'We didn’t have any space for a display in the library, so I did this on the brick wall outside the library doors. The word READ is spelled out with shamrocks that each have a book cover'.

'This month, I decided on a St. Patrick's Day theme. I included both fiction and non-fiction books on the shelves. I looked for Irish authors, or Ireland as the subject. For the board, I made copies of photos from Ireland travel books we have and Google images, etc. I also included some facts on St. Patrick's Day that I got from a history website'.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is celebrated around Australia on 21 March each year. It's a day where all Australians celebrate their cultural diversity. The day is also the United Nation's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Shelagh Walsh, Library Technician from Barkly College Secondary, Northern Territory, Australia has sent us these photos of banners and displays that Carrie, her talented Library Aide, put together for Harmony Day a couple of years ago.
Shelagh says: 'The banners were made as a class activity by Middle School students and were then hung up. The display had hands with photos of some of our staff from other countries so that students and staff could gain an idea of what a multicultural school we are. We also followed this with a week long program of activities in the Library during lunchtimes with staff teaching handicrafts from other countries – e.g. floral garlands from Kiribati and origami from Japan'.

This is a great idea for those of you who have very litle wall space for displays - create hanging displays in the form of banners!
It is lovely that Carrie has used the children’s work to make the displays, they look amazingly bright and cheerful and I’m sure the students enjoy being reminded of their creativity when the visit the library.

National Sea Week (New Zealand)

Sea Week is an annual event run by the NZ Association for Environmental Education. The theme for 2011 is Back to the Future! The culture, history and traditions of the sea. Kia kaha tangata moana!

Our teachers went off to a paid union meeting yesterday afternoon and the students were sent home. I took the advantage of a quiet afternoon to prepare this display for Sea Week. I simply tore some strips of coloured sugar paper (courtesy Art Department) into wavy lines to create sea and sand, got some cheerful images of sea creatures from Google Images which I printed on white card, cut everything out and put it together on the display board. The poster was printed from the Sea Week website and laminated.

There is a wide choice of books to display, I found some books about sea life, some adventure sea stories and some fiction stories based on a sea theme. Don't forget Seal Boy which matches this year's theme well and Kevin Boon's Whalers and Sealers:
