Bee Awareness Month (New Zealand)

By Helen Muxlow

The National Beekeeping Association of NZ started Bee Awareness month (BAM) in September 2014. BAM is devoted to encouraging New Zealanders to think about the honey bee and its critically important role in our biodiversity and economy.

Helen has made this fabulous display to support Bee Awareness Month and make her students aware of this important initiative. Here are her comments:

'The Bees hanging from the ceiling are made of cut up pool noodles with black electrical tape, google eyes and pipe cleaner wings. The articles on the wall are from The Wellington Newspaper 1st September 2016 titled Plan Bee, and The Life insert in the Dominion Post titled "The romance of Honey" 7 September 2016. The bees on the wall were black and white images photocopied onto yellow paper'.

Samoan Language Week (May 29th - 4th June 2016)

By Elaine Pearson

“E felelei manu, ae ma’au i o latou ofaga:
Birds migrate to environments where they survive and thrive."

It's not too late! Find the posters that should have arrived in your schools (New Zealand) and gather together all your Samoan books to celebrate Samoan Language Week! Our Samoan students always appreciate the effort to recognize their culture and it's a great way to promote new and related books.

Matariki

By Michele Ayres

Here is another display to remember for Matariki next year.
I particularly like the way Michele has used an existing shelving bay to create the Marae - quite simple but very effective.
I'd be tempted to lave it up permanently!

Matariki - Maori New Year

By Jacqueline Gardner-Cook & Courtney Newman

Two of our students created this display for Matariki, we love Jacqueline's painting!
I attached some stars onto a boring black post and now we are ready to celebrate Maori New Year!

If you don't know much about Matariki you can find some details here:

ANZAC Day

By Sally

I just love this clever display by Sally from Christchurch, New Zealand.
It was a joint effort with students and members of the public - a great way to bring the joint (school & public) community together. The poppies are all knitted, crocheted, or sewn.
I bet it has a huge impact on everyone who sees it, it's really impressive!
Well done Sally and thanks for sharing it.

New Zealand Stories

By Elaine Pearson

Here is a quick display to showcase all the Scholastic 'My New Zealand Story' books.
Pins on the map indicate where the stories are based.
My Story is a series of historical novels for children, each book is written in the form of a fictional diary of a young person living during an important event or time period in NZ history.
